What you should know
Fuel Type Breakdown
Canister (Isobutane): High power, easy to use, great simmer control. Best for high altitude and cold, but leaves empty canisters. Alcohol: Lightest overall system, silent operation, but slow boil times and requires denatured alcohol. Solid Fuel: Simplest and cheapest, but low heat output and leaves residue.
Titanium vs. Aluminum
Titanium: Incredibly durable and 50% lighter than aluminum. Downside: It’s expensive and prone to scorching food due to rapid, uneven heating. Aluminum: Excellent heat transfer, inexpensive, but less durable and slightly heavier. It's the choice for car camping but still viable for budget-conscious hikers.
The "System" Advantage
Integrated cooking systems (like Jetboil) are designed for maximum thermal efficiency. They lock the pot to the burner, minimizing heat loss. While often heavier than minimalist setups, they use less fuel over the long run, leading to significant weight savings on extended trips.
